Coogee Beach: Is It Safe? Can I Swim There? What to Do There?

Located just 8km southeast of Sydney CBD, Coogee Beach is a popular destination for beachside holidays. Situated in a densely populated Eastern suburb, it serves up a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, shops, and of course, fun on the beach. Hugely popular with both international and domestic tourists, it's a hive of activity year-round and perfect for those looking for a "Bondi experience" minus the throngs of crowds.
Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach is the ultimate beachside hotel, providing you with the perfect base to explore the beach, local attractions and the best the area has to offer.

Is Coogee Beach Safe?

Whenever people book holidays to beachside destinations, one of their first searches will often be "is the beach safe?" From water conditions and sharks to cleanliness and patrols, knowing what to expect can help you enjoy less stress and more fun in the sun.

While quieter than nearby Bondi Beach, Coogee Beach still attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every season. With an average of just 35 rescues per year (less than 0.4 per thousand), it's considered as one of the safest beaches not only in Sydney but also in NSW.

Daily beach patrols running from 7 am to 5 pm, gentle waves and less overcrowding make Coogee Beach an extremely popular choice for families looking for a holiday by the beach.

Can you Swim at Coogee Beach?

Absolutely! In fact, the warm, clean waters of Coogee Beach are one of the main reasons people decide to holiday here. When it comes to beaches in the Eastern suburbs, Coogee tends to have a much more relaxed, quieter and less overcrowded environment perfect for long lazy days under the sun.
Being located in a southeastern facing bay and having Wedding Cake island acting as a wind barrier and wave break, the sea tends to be calm and gentle. Combined with the steep nature of the beach, this further reduces swell and contributes to gentler waves.

Coogee is also patrolled, adding an extra layer of safety and security for beachgoers. If swimming in the sea isn't your thing, you also have a variety of outdoor beach pools, including the Ladies Baths, the Ross Jones Pool at the southern end of the beach and the rock pool to the North. Whether in the ocean or above the waves, swimming at Coogee Beach is a go.

Are There Sharks at Coogee Beach?

Like many beaches on Australia's East Coast there have been shark sightings from time to time. In order to keep beachgoers safe, the NSW Government has had a program in place since 1937.

Coogee Beach is included in the NSW Government’s Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program which includes 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong.

These beaches are netted by contractors using specially designed meshing nets to reduce the chances of shark encounters.

The nets do not create a total barrier between swimmers and sharks. They are designed to intercept sharks near meshed beaches, which reduces the chance of shark interaction.

For more information about the Government program visit the SharkSmart website where you can watch a video with more information or read the latest annual report.
